Ligal Sofer was born in 1988 and currently lives and works on Kibbutz Na’an in Israel where she conducts art workshops. Sofer holds a Bachelor of Fine Art from the Shenkar College of Design and Art (2016).

Sofer’s practice is eclectic and combinations of various mediums can often be observed in her works. Most of the pieces combine installation and sculpture and are medium to monumental in size, incorporating concrete castings, textiles and iron nets. These works constitute hybrid images of the world of Israeli construction and the safe space of home, interlacing the raw materials of the external environment with synthetic, home-made components from the domestic domain. 

In addition to these sculptural works, Sofer also creates small-scale drawings in pencil or charcoal on paper that deal with intimacy and the routine of everyday life. Her works can be found in various private collections.

Concrete works

In the process of developing her practice in both drawing and sculpting, Sofer combined the two in the series 20 square metres as well as Losing data, in which the artist brought together knitted images drawn from observation and concrete. Sofer began by drawing personal objects from a room of exactly twenty square metres in her home and then knitted the images and embedded them into concrete. Each of the resulting works were made to the standard size of a window for residential buildings in Israel.

Sofer’s installation work Piping is composed of elements of piping that have been processed in the texture of terrazzo. Rather than being buried in the ground as part of the foundations of a house, the piping is detached from the reality and materials to which it usually belongs and instead presented as a foreign and invasive object within the exhibition space.
